What Key Short Means

Key Short appears on a VDSC-series range when the control has seen a key press held for more than thirty seconds. Viking's VDSC548T Series service manual (2011, page 39) states the detection in exactly those terms, which makes it a timing threshold rather than a judgement about the key itself.

Common Causes of Key Short

  • A pad held down by hardened spill under the panel film
  • Something resting against the control panel for more than half a minute
  • Tactile key board failing and holding a contact closed

🔧 One Safe Check You Can Try

Wipe the control panel dry and press each pad once, feeling for one that does not spring back the way its neighbors do. Baked-on spill along the edge of a key, or a cleaning cloth left resting across the panel, will both hold a contact closed long enough to trigger this.

⚠ Why You Shouldn't Go Further Than That

  • The key board and the display board are separate parts joined by a cable, so which one is holding the short is decided by testing rather than by guessing.
  • The keypad membrane is bonded to the panel with its tail running through a slot, and that tail creases the moment the panel is lifted at an angle.
  • A control panel ordered against the wrong revision for the range generation will not talk to the display board it is paired with.

Opening a panel to inspect or repair something yourself doesn't automatically cancel your manufacturer's warranty — but it can risk accidental damage, and some manufacturers do have specific service conditions. Check your product's warranty terms, or ask us, before deciding.

Key Short FAQ

That points at the key board rather than at anything in the kitchen, and it wants testing against the display board it is cabled to.

No. Key Short is a key the control sees held down; Keyboard is the connection between the tactile key board and the display board going missing. Different problems, different parts.
