Viking Range Hood Running But Not Clearing the Air

Fan on, light on, but smoke is still hanging over the range? Here's the short list of usual causes, in the order to check them.

The fan is on, the light’s on, but smoke and steam are still hanging over the range instead of getting pulled up and out. This is one of the more common hood complaints, and the cause is usually one of a short list.

Filters First, Always

A grease-loaded filter is by far the most frequent reason a hood loses pull. Even with a healthy blower motor, a saturated baffle or mesh filter can choke airflow down to a fraction of what the fan is capable of moving. Clean or swap them before looking anywhere else.

Ductwork Can Quietly Clog Over Years

If filters are clean and performance still lags, grease can build up gradually inside the duct run itself, or a backdraft damper may not be swinging fully open. This is less common than a dirty filter but shows up on hoods that haven’t had the ducting serviced in a long time.

Match the Fan Speed to the Job

Searing a steak or running a full stockpot at a hard boil genuinely needs a higher setting than sautéing vegetables. What feels like a weak hood is sometimes just the wrong speed for the cooking happening underneath it.

When the Motor Itself Is the Problem

Clean filters, clear ducting, and the right fan speed with still-weak airflow points to the blower motor or its control board. Visit our range repair page to book a diagnostic.
