What DSI 2 or 5 Flashes Means
Two flashes every four seconds and five flashes every four seconds are both charted as a control problem in the Direct Spark Ignition module, with the same corrective action: cycle power, retry, and replace the module if the problem stands. Viking prints both rows in the VGIC530 gas range service manual (2010, page 11) and again in the RVGR3305B service manual (page 8).
Common Causes of DSI 2 or 5 Flashes
- Internal problem within the ignition module's control section
- Supply to the module unstable enough to upset it
- Module damaged by heat or moisture in its enclosure
🔧 One Safe Check You Can Try
Set every burner knob to off first, then cycle the range at its breaker and leave it a minute before restoring power. If either pattern returns, stop there - the module is reporting on itself and there is no adjustment to make.
⚠ Why You Shouldn't Go Further Than That
- Two different flash counts sharing one meaning is a detail that is easy to get wrong from memory, and a module ordered against a miscounted pattern is a wasted part.
- The retry sequence is carried out on an appliance still connected to its gas line, so the knobs go off before the breaker is touched.
- The module sits behind panelling that also carries the spark leads, and a lead pinched on reassembly arcs to the chassis instead of the electrode.
Opening a panel to inspect or repair something yourself doesn't automatically cancel your manufacturer's warranty — but it can risk accidental damage, and some manufacturers do have specific service conditions. Check your product's warranty terms, or ask us, before deciding.
