What RTD Prob Means
An RTD Prob problem flags that the oven's RTD (resistance temperature detector) — the probe feeding cavity-temperature data to the control board so it can regulate heat — is reading either open or shorted; this is confirmed directly in Viking's own service manual for this control platform.
Common Causes of RTD Prob
- RTD sensor has failed or drifted out of calibration
- Sensor wiring damaged or disconnected
- Connector between the RTD and EOC4 board has corroded
🔧 One Safe Check You Can Try
There's no homeowner-safe way to test this one — checking RTD resistance calls for a multimeter on a fully de-energized range, which is a job for a technician.
⚠ Why You Shouldn't Go Further Than That
- Checking sensor resistance means using a multimeter on a range that's fully powered down first — skip either part of that and you're risking a shock.
- The RTD is mounted inside the cavity close to the broil element, and pulling it out carelessly can tear up the insulation around it.
- Even a perfectly good replacement sensor will give bad readings if it's not seated exactly where the original one was, which wastes the whole repair.
- It's easy to mistake this for a heating-element problem and end up buying the wrong, pricier part.
- Opening the cavity or rear panel means pulling the range out from the wall past its anti-tip bracket, and a range put back without that bracket re-engaged can tip when the door is loaded.
Opening a panel to inspect or repair something yourself doesn't automatically cancel your manufacturer's warranty — but it can risk accidental damage, and some manufacturers do have specific service conditions. Check your product's warranty terms, or ask us, before deciding.
