What F9 Means
F9 on the ERC platform is a door-lock sensing failure reported with the door in the unlocked state. Viking's VGDO271 service notebook (page 42) sends the technician to the latch switch, the door motor, the plunger switch and the wiring linking them.
Common Causes of F9
- Latch switch failed, so the control never sees the unlocked position confirmed
- Door lock motor stalled partway through its travel
- Plunger switch at the door frame damaged or out of adjustment
- Wiring between the latch assembly and the control broken
🔧 One Safe Check You Can Try
Do not force the door. If the code appeared during or just after a self-clean run, leave the oven shut and let the cavity come down to room temperature on its own before anyone goes near the latch.
⚠ Why You Shouldn't Go Further Than That
- A self-clean run takes the cavity far past any cooking temperature, so a latch that faulted mid-cycle is not something to lever at while the oven is still hot.
- The latch motor shares its circuit with the door lock relay on the board, and testing it live means working alongside the same contacts that switch the burner.
- Viking's ERC flashes the word "door" separately when a full lock cycle does not finish inside sixty seconds, so a technician reads the two indications together rather than taking F9 alone.
Opening a panel to inspect or repair something yourself doesn't automatically cancel your manufacturer's warranty — but it can risk accidental damage, and some manufacturers do have specific service conditions. Check your product's warranty terms, or ask us, before deciding.
