What RTD Means
On the cycle-and-clean-light platform an oven probe problem appears as the cycle light alternating one second on and one second off with the clean light dark - the mirror image of the latch pattern. Viking labels the row "RTD (Oven Probe)" in the VESO5271 service manual (2013, page 27), and the identical chart is printed in the RDSCD230-5B service manual (page 22) and the VISC530 service manual (2009, page 18).
Common Causes of RTD
- Probe element open or shorted
- Probe lead damaged where it passes through the cavity wall
- Connector at the control board corroded or unseated
🔧 One Safe Check You Can Try
Nothing safe to test at home. What is worth doing is writing down which light blinks, because latch and probe problems share the same one-second rhythm on opposite lights, and on the phone that single detail decides which part the technician brings.
⚠ Why You Shouldn't Go Further Than That
- Probe resistance is read against the platform's own temperature curve with the oven dead at the breaker, so both a meter and the right figures are needed before any reading means anything.
- The probe sits in the cavity within reach of the broil element, and a replacement seated at a different depth reports a different temperature however good the part is.
- Reaching the control connectors means drawing a built-in oven out of its opening, where its whole weight lands on the cabinet lip while it sits there.
Opening a panel to inspect or repair something yourself doesn't automatically cancel your manufacturer's warranty — but it can risk accidental damage, and some manufacturers do have specific service conditions. Check your product's warranty terms, or ask us, before deciding.
