What F4 Means

F4 on the ERC platform means the oven temperature sensor or its circuit is reading shorted rather than open. Viking's VGDO271 service notebook (page 42) sets out the same investigation as for F3 - check sensor resistance and wiring - because the two codes are opposite ends of one failure.

Common Causes of F4

  • Conductors in the sensor lead touching where the insulation has been crushed or worn
  • Moisture or cleaner residue bridging the connector pins
  • Sensor element shorted internally

🔧 One Safe Check You Can Try

Nothing here can be checked safely at home. What helps the technician is knowing how the oven had been behaving in the weeks beforehand, since a sensor drifting towards a short usually reports too much temperature and leaves the cavity under-heated.

⚠ Why You Shouldn't Go Further Than That

  • A shorted sensor and a damaged harness hand the ERC the same reading, and separating them means measuring at both ends with the oven isolated.
  • Oven cleaner that has run down into the connector is a realistic cause here, and rinsing it without removing and drying the plug leaves residue behind to bridge the pins again.
  • Fitting a new sensor without finding the crushed length of lead puts a fresh part onto the same error.

Opening a panel to inspect or repair something yourself doesn't automatically cancel your manufacturer's warranty — but it can risk accidental damage, and some manufacturers do have specific service conditions. Check your product's warranty terms, or ask us, before deciding.

FAQ

F4 FAQ

They describe opposite electrical problems in one circuit - F3 is that circuit reading open, F4 is it reading shorted. The parts and the tests are the same, which is why Viking lists identical corrective action for both.

It is plausible. Cleaner that runs behind the cavity liner can reach the sensor connector, and once dry it can leave a conductive film across the pins.
