What F3 Means
F3 on the ERC platform means the oven temperature sensor or its circuit is reading open. Viking's VGDO271 service notebook (page 42) has the technician check sensor resistance and wiring; on this platform resistance climbs as the cavity heats, and the ERC turns that reading into the temperature it displays.
Common Causes of F3
- Sensor lead unplugged at the J4 or J6 connector on the rear of the ERC
- Break in the sensor lead where it passes through the cavity wall
- Sensor element itself has gone open
🔧 One Safe Check You Can Try
There is no home test for this. If the oven has recently been pulled out for cleaning behind it or for other work, say so when you book the call, because the sensor lead ends in a plug on the back of the control and is easy to leave half-seated.
⚠ Why You Shouldn't Go Further Than That
- Resistance has to be read against this platform's own temperature curve with the oven dead at the breaker, so a meter and the correct figures are both needed before any conclusion holds.
- The sensor lead is clipped along a defined route that keeps it away from the burner box, and a lead left outside that route bakes against hot metal until its insulation gives way.
- On a double oven the two cavities use separate connectors, so a sensor replaced on the wrong cavity leaves the original problem exactly where it was.
Opening a panel to inspect or repair something yourself doesn't automatically cancel your manufacturer's warranty — but it can risk accidental damage, and some manufacturers do have specific service conditions. Check your product's warranty terms, or ask us, before deciding.
