Viking Oven F02 Error Code

F02 signals that the oven's RTD (resistance temperature detector) sensor is reading either open or shorted; this is confirmed directly in Viking's own built-in oven service manual.

What F02 Means

F02 signals that the oven's RTD (resistance temperature detector) sensor is reading either open or shorted; this is confirmed directly in Viking's own built-in oven service manual.

Common Causes of F02

  • RTD sensor has failed or drifted
  • Sensor wiring is damaged or disconnected
  • Connector at the RTD or control board has corroded

🔧 One Safe Check You Can Try

There's no reliable way to test this yourself — checking RTD resistance takes a multimeter on a fully de-energized oven, which falls to a technician.

⚠ Why You Shouldn't Go Further Than That

  • Reading the sensor's resistance correctly needs a multimeter and an oven that's completely de-energized — cut a corner on either and you're risking a shock.
  • The RTD sits inside the cavity close to the broil element, and yanking it out carelessly can damage the insulation around it.
  • A replacement sensor mounted even slightly out of position will read wrong regardless of whether the part itself is good, which wastes the whole repair effort.
  • It's easy to confuse this with a heating-element problem and wind up replacing the wrong, pricier part instead.
  • The sensor lead is a fixed length clipped along the cavity, so the panel only comes away a few inches before the connector at the far end takes the strain.

Opening a panel to inspect or repair something yourself doesn't automatically cancel your manufacturer's warranty — but it can risk accidental damage, and some manufacturers do have specific service conditions. Check your product's warranty terms, or ask us, before deciding.
