What Diverter Timeout Means
One flash then four means the main control energised the wash diverter but never saw feedback confirming it had reached the commanded position. Viking's FDB451 dishwasher service manual (2012, page 12) names the diverter, its wiring and the control board as the three places to look.
Common Causes of Diverter Timeout
- Debris jamming the diverter so it cannot reach position
- Diverter motor or its position switch has failed
- Wiring between the control board and the diverter is broken
🔧 One Safe Check You Can Try
Pull the lower rack and look into the sump for a bone fragment, a fruit stone or a chip of broken crockery that could be jamming the vane. Clearing debris from the filters is genuinely homeowner work, and it is the one physical cause you can reach.
⚠ Why You Shouldn't Go Further Than That
- Viking gives the diverter motor a nominal 2.7 kilohm reading and its switch a closed-circuit reading, both taken at the control board rather than at the part itself.
- The diverter sits in the sump under the filters, and levering at it by hand to free it shears the vane off its shaft.
- A diverter that never reports position leaves the machine washing from one arm only, which reads as poor cleaning rather than a problem until somebody counts the flashes.
