Common Problems

Why Is My Viking Dishwasher Leaving Standing Water?

Opening the door to a puddle at the bottom is one of the most common dishwasher complaints — here's what to check, in order.

Opening the dishwasher door to a puddle at the bottom is one of the most common complaints we hear, and in the large majority of cases it comes down to something you can check yourself before booking a repair.

The Filter Is Almost Always Involved

Every Viking dishwasher has a removable filter basket near the bottom of the tub that catches food particles before they reach the pump. Over weeks of use it collects enough debris to choke off drainage entirely — pull it, rinse it under the tap, and run a short cycle to see if that alone solves it.

Look at the Drain Line Next

If the filter is clean and water is still sitting there, check the corrugated drain hose running from the machine toward the sink area for a sharp kink, particularly if the dishwasher was recently reinstalled or the cabinet beneath the sink was reorganized.

When the Pump Itself Has Failed

A drain pump jammed with a small object, or simply worn out from years of use, produces the same sign as a clogged filter, but this repair involves opening the base of the unit and isn’t something we’d recommend tackling without training.
