What Hi/Low Temp Upper Means

With the TruProtect system enabled, a red "Hi/Low Temp Upper" message in the message center together with six beeps every minute means the upper zone has drifted outside its allowed band. Viking's VUWC244DRSS service manual (2010, page 8) adds an important qualification: the alarm is normal behavior when a set point has been changed by more than 10 degrees Fahrenheit, or during heavy use.

Common Causes of Hi/Low Temp Upper

  • Set point changed by more than 10 degrees Fahrenheit, so the zone is still catching up
  • Heavy use with the door opened repeatedly
  • Upper compartment fan or heater no longer holding the zone
  • Upper thermistor reading wrongly

🔧 One Safe Check You Can Try

Check first whether anyone has changed the upper zone set point recently, or whether the door has been opened repeatedly - Viking treats both as normal reasons for this alarm. Press the On/Off keypad to reset it, then watch whether it returns once the zone has had time to settle.

⚠ Why You Shouldn't Go Further Than That

  • Resetting the alarm does not clear the condition - Viking is explicit that an alarm reset resumes if the cause has not been corrected, so a message center that goes quiet proves nothing.
  • The upper zone has its own fan and its own heater on this dual-zone design, and which of them has stopped is decided in the control's service mode rather than by feel.
  • Wine sitting outside its band for long periods is the loss this alarm exists to prevent, and a bottle does not recover the way food does once it has been too warm.

Opening a panel to inspect or repair something yourself doesn't automatically cancel your manufacturer's warranty — but it can risk accidental damage, and some manufacturers do have specific service conditions. Check your product's warranty terms, or ask us, before deciding.

FAQ

Hi/Low Temp Upper FAQ

No. Viking documents that a set point change of more than ten degrees can raise this alarm while the zone catches up, and calls it a normal condition.

Press the On/Off keypad, which resets the alarms. If the underlying condition is still there, the alarm comes back, and that is the useful answer.
