What F04 Means
F04 flags that the meat-probe input is reading shorted; this is confirmed directly in Viking's own built-in oven service manual.
Common Causes of F04
- Probe or probe cable is damaged and shorting internally
- Moisture has gotten into the probe jack
- Probe jack or its wiring to the control board has failed
🔧 One Safe Check You Can Try
Pull the meat probe out of its jack, check that the pins aren't bent or damp, then push it back in fully — this clears a good number of F04 cases on its own.
⚠ Why You Shouldn't Go Further Than That
- If unplugging the probe doesn't clear the code, checking the jack wiring itself calls for a de-energized oven.
- A damaged cable and a bad jack can look identical without continuity testing at a technician level.
- Getting the exact right replacement probe for a specific oven generation is easy to mess up without checking the parts catalog properly.
Opening a panel to inspect or repair something yourself doesn't automatically cancel your manufacturer's warranty — but it can risk accidental damage, and some manufacturers do have specific service conditions. Check your product's warranty terms, or ask us, before deciding.
