What Motor Control Comms Error Means
One flash then three means the main control cannot successfully communicate with the motor control. Viking's FDB451 dishwasher service manual (2012, page 12) lists disconnected wiring between the two boards first, then a defective motor control, then a defective main control.
Common Causes of Motor Control Comms Error
- Harness between the main control and the motor control unplugged or damaged
- Motor control board has failed
- Main control board has failed
🔧 One Safe Check You Can Try
Switch the machine off at the breaker for a couple of minutes before anyone assumes hardware. Two boards that have stopped talking sometimes come back after a clean restart, and it is the only step available from outside the door.
⚠ Why You Shouldn't Go Further Than That
- The break can sit at either end of the harness, so the board that reports the problem is not necessarily the board that needs changing.
- The main control lives inside the door behind a housing sealed against steam, and a seal refitted imperfectly delivers moisture onto the boards being diagnosed.
- Continuity-testing a harness between two boards needs the machine isolated and partly withdrawn, with both ends reachable at the same time.
Opening a panel to inspect or repair something yourself doesn't automatically cancel your manufacturer's warranty — but it can risk accidental damage, and some manufacturers do have specific service conditions. Check your product's warranty terms, or ask us, before deciding.
