What 1 Means
Error 1 on Viking's built-in induction cooktop platform (VICU/VCCU-series) shows up when the induction element can't recognize a compatible cooking vessel, and the residual-heat indicator on the display flashes at 1 Hz for as long as it's active; this is confirmed directly in Viking's own service manual for this platform.
Common Causes of 1
- Cookware isn't induction-compatible
- Cookware isn't centered on the induction zone
- Pan-detection circuitry on the induction generator board has failed
🔧 One Safe Check You Can Try
Check that your cookware is induction-compatible (a magnet should cling firmly to the base) and sitting centered on the zone — that alone resolves most Error 1 cases with no repair needed.
⚠ Why You Shouldn't Go Further Than That
- If properly centered, compatible cookware still sets off Error 1, testing the generator board means opening the cooktop, which is line-voltage work best handled by a technician.
- The induction generator board is mounted beneath the glass near high-current coils, so bumping the wrong connector can introduce a second problem on top of the first.
- Mistaking a cookware compatibility issue for an actual hardware problem means paying for a repair call that wasn't necessary.
Opening a panel to inspect or repair something yourself doesn't automatically cancel your manufacturer's warranty — but it can risk accidental damage, and some manufacturers do have specific service conditions. Check your product's warranty terms, or ask us, before deciding.
