What Shr Means
Shr displayed with the word FREEZER means the control is reading that compartment's thermistor as a short circuit. Viking's FDBB5361 service manual (page 41) gives it the same five-beep, once-only audible signal as the open-sensor alarm, and the same automatic switch of the display to the affected zone.
Common Causes of Shr
- Sensor conductors touching where insulation has worn through
- Moisture tracking across the connector pins at the control board
- Thermistor element shorted internally
🔧 One Safe Check You Can Try
There is nothing to measure at home, but the cabinet's behavior is a clue worth passing on. A shorted sensor leaves the control running as though cut-out is never reached, so heavy frost build-up and a compartment colder than its setting fit this alarm rather than contradicting it.
⚠ Why You Shouldn't Go Further Than That
- A shorted sensor and a control board problem present identically, and separating them needs resistance readings with the cabinet dead at the breaker.
- An over-cooling compartment frosts its evaporator faster than the defrost cycle can clear it, so the longer this runs the more ice a technician has to deal with before anything can be tested.
- Moisture at the connector is a sign rather than a cause, and drying it without finding where the water is coming from puts the same error back within weeks.
Opening a panel to inspect or repair something yourself doesn't automatically cancel your manufacturer's warranty — but it can risk accidental damage, and some manufacturers do have specific service conditions. Check your product's warranty terms, or ask us, before deciding.
