What E1 Means

E1 means the air-temperature sensor has faulted — a failed thermistor, damaged harness, or corroded connector. On Viking upright freezers this sensor clips to the upper air duct and reads roughly 5,000 ohms at 77°F, 16,000 ohms at 32°F, and about 32,000 ohms at 0°F when working correctly.

Common Causes of E1

  • Sensor has been dislodged from its mounting clip
  • Wire harness is damaged at the cabinet pass-through
  • Connector has corroded
  • Thermistor element has fractured, causing the problem to appear and disappear intermittently

🔧 One Safe Check You Can Try

There's no safe way to test sensor resistance without disconnecting it, which is technician work — a sensor knocked loose from its clip and exposed to warmer air near the door will also read incorrectly without actually being failing.

⚠ Why You Shouldn't Go Further Than That

  • Confirming whether the sensor, harness, or connector is the actual problem means testing resistance directly, which risks further wiring damage without the right approach.

Opening a panel to inspect or repair something yourself doesn't automatically cancel your manufacturer's warranty — but it can risk accidental damage, and some manufacturers do have specific service conditions. Check your product's warranty terms, or ask us, before deciding.

E1 FAQ

Because the control is now working from a reading it cannot trust. It may hold for a while and then drift badly, and there is no warning in between the two.

Being out of its clip. This one belongs in the upper air duct, and a sensor knocked loose sits in warmer air near the door, which the control reads as a cabinet warmer than it really is.
