What FLAME-OUT Means

A burner that lights while the safety valve button is held and goes out the moment it is released is a documented condition in Viking's outdoor grill troubleshooting table. The manual names three checks for it: a thermocouple that has been kinked, the safety valve button not having been held long enough, and black spots on the infrared screen (T-Series service manual, 2009, page 30, repeated in the E-Series service manual, 2011, page 36).

Common Causes of FLAME-OUT

  • Safety valve button released before the thermocouple had warmed
  • Thermocouple kinked, so it never reaches temperature at its tip
  • Thermocouple out of the flame after cleaning or reassembly
  • Black spots on the infrared screen changing where the flame sits

🔧 One Safe Check You Can Try

Shut the gas off at the tank or the supply valve if you smell gas at any point, and do not keep trying. With no gas odor, hold the safety valve button in for longer after the burner lights - Viking lists that as the first thing to get right, because the thermocouple needs time to heat before it will hold the valve open on its own.

⚠ Why You Shouldn't Go Further Than That

  • The whole point of the thermocouple is to shut the gas off when it cannot sense a flame, so a burner that will not hold is the safety device doing its job rather than an inconvenience to bypass.
  • Bending a thermocouple back into the flame by hand is how they get kinked in the first place, and a kinked one is on Viking's own cause list.
  • Infrared screens are replaced rather than cleaned back to health, and judging whether black spots have gone too far is a comparison against a good one.

Opening a panel to inspect or repair something yourself doesn't automatically cancel your manufacturer's warranty — but it can risk accidental damage, and some manufacturers do have specific service conditions. Check your product's warranty terms, or ask us, before deciding.

FLAME-OUT FAQ

Check your model's use and care guide for the figure. The principle is that the thermocouple has to get properly hot before it can hold the valve open, and letting go early is the commonest reason a burner dies on release.

Often the thermocouple has moved out of the flame during a clean, or has been kinked while something else was being fitted. Both are on Viking's list and both are recoverable.
