What E:01 Means

E:01 is the overflow problem. Viking's FDWU324 service manual (December 2018, page 30) describes exactly what happens: once the overflow switch has signalled for twenty seconds the control enters a two-minute standby during which the drain pump runs by itself, and if the signal is still present at the end of that standby the machine stops responding to anything except the ON/OFF button.

Common Causes of E:01

  • A split or torn hose, or a part that has come apart inside
  • Drain pump not clearing water fast enough
  • Flow meter miscounting, so the control fills past the level it intended
  • Water inlet valve passing when it should be shut
  • Cable harness problem or a control problem giving a false overflow signal

🔧 One Safe Check You Can Try

Close the water supply valve to the dishwasher before doing anything else, then look at the floor and the cabinet base for visible water. Do not start another program - the machine has already locked itself down for a reason, and adding water to a tub the control believes is overflowing is the one thing to avoid.

⚠ Why You Shouldn't Go Further Than That

  • The overflow switch sits in the base pan under live connections, so checking for standing water there means the machine off at the breaker first.
  • A dishwasher that has locked itself to the ON/OFF button is telling you it has already tried the drain pump for two minutes without success, which is not a state to override.
  • Water traveling under fitted cabinetry can move for days before anything shows at the kickplate, by which point the subfloor has been absorbing it.

Opening a panel to inspect or repair something yourself doesn't automatically cancel your manufacturer's warranty — but it can risk accidental damage, and some manufacturers do have specific service conditions. Check your product's warranty terms, or ask us, before deciding.

FAQ

E:01 FAQ

That is the documented behavior, not a failure. Viking's design locks the controls once the overflow signal survives a two-minute standby, so that is the code working rather than the machine dying.

It could - a failing flow meter or a harness problem are both on Viking's list. That still needs confirming rather than assuming, because the alternative is an active leak.
