What 6 Means
Error 6 is an error on the filter board. Viking's VISC530 service manual (2009, page 17) gives three probable reasons: a persistent low voltage condition, stored configuration data that has gone wrong, and a failure in the board's own electronics - with the instruction to check the supply voltage first and replace the filter board only if the problem survives a good reading.
Common Causes of 6
- Supply voltage sitting persistently below specification
- Stored configuration data on the filter board has become corrupted
- Electronic failure on the filter board itself
🔧 One Safe Check You Can Try
Note whether the house has been having voltage problems - lights dimming when a large appliance starts, or other equipment behaving oddly. Viking puts permanent low voltage at the top of the list for this code, which makes it a question worth answering before any board is ordered.
⚠ Why You Shouldn't Go Further Than That
- Checking supply voltage at the cooktop means measuring at a live 240-volt connection behind the appliance, which is not a homeowner measurement.
- Replacing the filter board without first ruling out the supply puts a new board onto the same low voltage that upset the last one.
- The filter board sits under the glass with its harnesses cut to length, so lifting the top further than the leads allow pulls connectors off the board.
Opening a panel to inspect or repair something yourself doesn't automatically cancel your manufacturer's warranty — but it can risk accidental damage, and some manufacturers do have specific service conditions. Check your product's warranty terms, or ask us, before deciding.
