What E5 Means
E5 means the compressor circuit has faulted — a healthy compressor's common-to-start and common-to-run windings should each read 3-15 ohms, and this is typically the most expensive of the freezer's error codes to resolve.
Common Causes of E5
- Compressor winding has failed
- Start relay or overload protector has failed
- Compressor wiring has degraded
🔧 One Safe Check You Can Try
There's no safe home test for compressor circuit wiring.
⚠ Why You Shouldn't Go Further Than That
- Testing compressor circuits live is a genuine shock hazard.
- Misdiagnosing a relay problem as a full compressor failure means paying for a far more expensive repair than needed.
Opening a panel to inspect or repair something yourself doesn't automatically cancel your manufacturer's warranty — but it can risk accidental damage, and some manufacturers do have specific service conditions. Check your product's warranty terms, or ask us, before deciding.
