Viking Freezer E2 Error Code

E2 means the defrost system failed to raise the evaporator temperature above 45°F within its allotted 25-30 minute defrost window, letting frost build up heavily on the coils.

What E2 Means

E2 means the defrost system failed to raise the evaporator temperature above 45°F within its allotted 25-30 minute defrost window, letting frost build up heavily on the coils.

Common Causes of E2

  • Defrost heater has burned out (should read 20-30 ohms; a failed one reads open)
  • Defrost thermostat has failed (should show continuity at room temperature, opening near 140°F)
  • Adaptive defrost control board has stopped triggering the cycle

🔧 One Safe Check You Can Try

You can visually check the rear panel for heavy frost (more than about a quarter inch confirms defrost failure), but don't test the heater or thermostat yourself.

⚠ Why You Shouldn't Go Further Than That

  • Testing the defrost heater safely means disconnecting leads and measuring continuity with the unit de-energized.
  • Removing the rear panel to inspect the evaporator coils risks damaging refrigerant lines if done without the right technique.

Opening a panel to inspect or repair something yourself doesn't automatically cancel your manufacturer's warranty — but it can risk accidental damage, and some manufacturers do have specific service conditions. Check your product's warranty terms, or ask us, before deciding.

FAQ

E2 FAQ

More than roughly a quarter of an inch on the rear panel is the figure used to separate a defrost failure from ordinary build-up. A light dusting after heavy use is normal.

Emptying it and letting it thaw clears the ice, but it does nothing about whatever stopped the defrost cycle, so the coils ice up again over the following weeks.
