Common Problems

Why Won’t My Viking Range Burner Light?

Steady clicking with no flame is one of the most common Viking range calls we get, and the fix is usually mechanical, not electrical.

You turn the knob, hear the igniter clicking away steadily, and nothing happens. It’s one of the more common calls we get on Viking ranges, and the good news is the cause is almost always mechanical rather than a sign the range is failing.

Start With the Igniter Tip

Each burner has its own small ceramic igniter mounted beside the burner head, and its only job is to throw a spark across a tiny gap. That gap only needs a trace of grease, a boil-over residue, or a bit of leftover moisture to stop working reliably — the clicking can sound completely normal even while the spark itself is too weak or misdirected to catch the gas.

Check How the Burner Cap Sits

Lift the cap and grate off and look at how the cap seats on its base. If it’s rotated even slightly out of position, or a food particle is lodged in one of the small ports around its rim, gas can escape without ever reaching the igniter’s spark path. Reseating the cap correctly solves this more often than people expect.

One Situation Where You Should Stop Immediately

Clicking with no flame is one thing. Smelling gas is another. If you catch any hint of a gas odor near the range, shut the knob off, skip any further attempts to light it, crack a window, and shut off the gas supply at the source until it’s been checked.
