What E4 Means
E4 means the display thermistor ("sensor A") is reading out of range; this is confirmed directly in Viking's own refrigeration service manual.
Common Causes of E4
- Sensor wire is disconnected, causing an open circuit
- Thermistor wiring has shorted
- Display thermistor has failed
🔧 One Safe Check You Can Try
This isn't a test to attempt at home — reading thermistor resistance takes a multimeter on a de-energized unit, which is a technician's job.
⚠ Why You Shouldn't Go Further Than That
- Testing thermistor resistance means a fully de-energized unit and a multimeter — leave out either one and you risk a shock.
- This can be mistaken for a control board failure, leading to replacing the wrong, pricier part.
- A sensor that goes back in even slightly out of place keeps reading inaccurately no matter how good the replacement part is.
- Getting to this sensor means pulling interior panels whose plastic is brittle at freezer temperatures, so they crack along their fixing points as they come away.
Opening a panel to inspect or repair something yourself doesn't automatically cancel your manufacturer's warranty — but it can risk accidental damage, and some manufacturers do have specific service conditions. Check your product's warranty terms, or ask us, before deciding.
