What 4 Flashes Means
Four flashes every five seconds is the VCC3 inverter reporting a compressor problem. Viking's SMR-0008A service manual (2010, page 41) directs the technician to measure winding resistance across the terminal pins and to test for continuity between a pin and the compressor shell; readings outside specification condemn the compressor, while readings inside it send the search back to the inverter cable.
Common Causes of 4 Flashes
- A compressor winding has drifted out of specification or gone to ground
- The compressor is mechanically seized and drawing a problem current
- The inverter-to-compressor cable is interrupted and mimicking a winding problem
🔧 One Safe Check You Can Try
Nothing can be done from outside the cabinet here. The useful step is to plan around a repair that runs longer than most, because replacing a compressor means opening the sealed refrigerant circuit with recovery and evacuation equipment rather than swapping a part on the spot.
⚠ Why You Shouldn't Go Further Than That
- Continuity from a terminal pin to the compressor shell means a winding has gone to ground, which is a measurement to take with the appliance dead rather than a sign to confirm by switching it on again.
- Opening the sealed refrigerant circuit is EPA-regulated work needing recovery equipment, so it is not a repair that can be started and then abandoned partway.
- Cycling the power over and over to see whether the compressor catches loads a motor the control has already flagged as failing.
Opening a panel to inspect or repair something yourself doesn't automatically cancel your manufacturer's warranty — but it can risk accidental damage, and some manufacturers do have specific service conditions. Check your product's warranty terms, or ask us, before deciding.
