What ERROR Means
On Viking's built-in microwave/convection oven platform, the display shows "ERROR" after 16 seconds of cleaning time into a sensor-cook cycle when the AH (absolute humidity) sensor is reading open or shorted; this is confirmed directly in Viking's own service manual for this platform. The same message also pops up if the door gets opened or STOP/CLEAR gets touched during the first stage of a sensor-cook cycle.
Common Causes of ERROR
- Door was opened or STOP/CLEAR was touched during the first stage of sensor cooking (not an actual problem)
- AH (absolute humidity) sensor has failed or shorted
- Sensor wiring is damaged
🔧 One Safe Check You Can Try
If ERROR showed up because the door was opened or STOP/CLEAR got touched partway through a sensor-cook cycle, that's normal and expected — just restart the cycle and let it run uninterrupted. If it comes back on a cycle you didn't interrupt, that points to the AH sensor itself.
⚠ Why You Shouldn't Go Further Than That
- The AH sensor is mounted inside the cavity close to the microwave feed and heating elements, so opening the housing to test it without fully isolating power carries both a shock risk and a microwave-leakage risk.
- Any service work on a microwave/speed oven housing calls for a leakage safety check afterward, and that's not something a homeowner has the equipment to verify.
- A sensor put back incorrectly can keep triggering false readings even with a brand-new part installed.
- This can be mistaken for a control board issue, leading to replacing the wrong, pricier part.
Opening a panel to inspect or repair something yourself doesn't automatically cancel your manufacturer's warranty — but it can risk accidental damage, and some manufacturers do have specific service conditions. Check your product's warranty terms, or ask us, before deciding.
