What HI Means

This alarm displays once interior temperature has stayed at or above 15°F for the predetermined period held in the control's EEPROM, which Viking's FDBB5361 service manual gives as three hours (page 40, where the refrigerator-zone equivalent is 50°F for the same three hours). It is a food-safety warning about how long the compartment has been warm, not a diagnosis of a failed part in itself.

Common Causes of HI

  • Extended door opening let warm air in
  • Recent power interruption let the cabinet warm up
  • An underlying sensor, fan, or defrost problem (see E1-E6) is preventing proper cooling

🔧 One Safe Check You Can Try

Because the alarm has already waited three hours before speaking, judge the contents first and the cabinet second. If it follows a long door opening or a power interruption, give the compartment time to pull back down; if it persists well past that, it points to one of the sensor, fan or defrost problems rather than to how the freezer has been used.

FAQ

HI FAQ

At least three hours, because that is how long the control waits before sounding. Check the food rather than assuming the clock starts when the alarm does.

Not necessarily. A large warm load or a long door opening will lift the compartment, and the alarm only speaks once the temperature has stayed above the limit for the full period.
