Safety & Risks

Never Open a Viking Microwave’s Cabinet Yourself

A microwave looks about as harmless as an appliance gets. What's inside the housing is a different story entirely.

A microwave or speed oven looks about as harmless as an appliance gets — a metal box with a turntable and a keypad. What’s inside that housing is a different story, and it’s why we tell homeowners, without exception, to leave the cabinet closed and call a technician.

The Part That Can Hurt You Long After It’s Unplugged

Tucked inside the housing is a high-voltage capacitor built to hold a serious electrical charge, and pulling the plug does nothing to drain it on its own. That charge can sit there for hours, occasionally much longer, waiting for something to complete the circuit. Touch the wrong two points and the resulting shock is genuinely capable of being fatal, which is the single reason this repair category gets treated so differently from, say, swapping a dishwasher pump.

A Second, Quieter Risk

Separately from the capacitor, a door or latch that’s been damaged or isn’t sealing correctly can, in rare cases, let microwave energy leak out during operation. There’s no home test that reliably confirms this one way or the other — it takes calibrated equipment a technician brings with them.

Signs You Should Stop Using It Immediately

Visible sparking inside the cavity, a scorched or burning smell, or a door or drawer that won’t stay firmly closed all mean stop mid-task and unplug it, rather than finishing the current cook or trying to diagnose it yourself.

What’s Fine to Handle Yourself

Wiping down the exterior, clearing debris from around the door or drawer edge, and checking that the unit has power at the breaker are all perfectly safe. Everything past the housing itself belongs to a trained technician — visit our microwave repair page to book a visit.
