A cycle that ends with water still sitting in the tub is frustrating, but before assuming the worst, there’s a short list of checks that resolve a real share of these on the spot.
Pull the Filter First
This is almost always the first place to look. Lift out the lower rack, twist the filter free from the tub floor, and rinse away anything trapped in either the coarse screen or the fine mesh beneath it, then lock it back into place.
Check How the Dishwasher Actually Drains
If your unit drains through an air gap fitting on the counter or into a garbage disposal, confirm neither is the bottleneck. A brand-new dishwasher connected to a disposal that still has its factory knockout plug intact is a surprisingly common — and easy to miss — cause of no drainage at all.
Look Behind the Machine
A drain hose kinked into a tight bend, especially after the dishwasher was recently pulled out and reinstalled, can restrict flow even when nothing is technically clogged.
Run a Short Cycle to Confirm
With the filter clean and the drain path checked, run a short wash cycle and watch the end of it. Full, clear drainage means you’ve solved it.
If Water Is Still Sitting There
At that point the drain pump itself is the likely cause, and that’s a job for a technician rather than a home fix. Visit our dishwasher repair page to book a visit.
