If you only do one piece of dishwasher maintenance, make it this one. Cleaning the filter takes about five minutes and heads off more drainage service calls than anything else on the list.
Find It
Slide out the bottom rack and look toward the back or center of the tub floor for a round part that twists free — most Viking models mold a small arrow into the plastic showing which way to turn it.
Pull, Rinse, Repeat
Twist to release it, lift it out, and rinse both the coarse outer screen and the finer inner mesh under warm running water. A soft toothbrush works well for anything stuck in the mesh that plain water won’t budge.
Glance at the Sump While It’s Open
With the filter out, take thirty seconds to look into the opening beneath it. Glass fragments, produce stickers, and small bones are common finds that hide in the sump rather than the filter itself.
Seat It Fully When You’re Done
Push the filter back in and twist until you feel it stop or click. A filter that isn’t fully locked can cause its own drainage and wash-quality problems, undoing the whole point of cleaning it.
A Realistic Schedule
Once a month is enough for most households, more often if dishes go in without a quick pre-rinse. For anything beyond the filter, book a dishwasher repair visit.
