What Drain Pump Error Means
Three flashes then three means the drain pump's current sense reading has landed outside the expected range. Viking's FDB451 dishwasher service manual (2012, page 12) gives three causes in order: wiring disconnected between the main control and the pump, a defective pump, and a defective main control.
Common Causes of Drain Pump Error
- Wiring between the main control and the drain pump disconnected
- Drain pump motor has failed
- Main control misreading the pump's current draw
🔧 One Safe Check You Can Try
This is a current measurement rather than a blockage, so clearing filters will not clear it. What it is worth doing is listening during the drain phase - a pump that hums without moving water and a pump that stays silent point to different ends of the same list.
⚠ Why You Shouldn't Go Further Than That
- Viking gives the drain pump a nominal 30.6 ohm reading between named control-board terminals, so confirming it means a meter on an isolated machine rather than a guess from the noise it makes.
- A pump reading out of range electrically can still be turning, which is why a drain that works imperfectly does not rule this code out.
- Drain pump connections sit at the bottom of the tub in the wet zone, and a fitting left a quarter turn loose leaks slowly onto the floor beneath.
Opening a panel to inspect or repair something yourself doesn't automatically cancel your manufacturer's warranty — but it can risk accidental damage, and some manufacturers do have specific service conditions. Check your product's warranty terms, or ask us, before deciding.
