What 7 Means

Error 7 is a voltage supply problem. Viking's VISC530 service manual (2009, page 17) lists the probable reasons in order: a missing L2 leg, a loose cable, a defective filter board and a defective power board, with the action starting at verifying L2 rather than at any part.

Common Causes of 7

  • One leg of the 240-volt supply missing at the cooktop
  • Supply cable loose at a terminal
  • Filter board failed
  • Power board failed

🔧 One Safe Check You Can Try

There is nothing safe to check at the cooktop, but there is something worth checking at the panel. An induction cooktop runs on both legs of a 240-volt supply, and a double-pole breaker that has tripped on one side only, or a loose connection at the panel, leaves it with half its supply.

⚠ Why You Shouldn't Go Further Than That

  • Verifying a missing supply leg means measuring at live terminals, which is licensed work rather than a kitchen check.
  • A cooktop running on one leg can appear to half-work, which tempts people to keep using it while the boards downstream run on a supply they were never designed for.
  • Viking puts L2 ahead of the boards in its own order of investigation, and skipping straight to a board replacement is the expensive way round.

Opening a panel to inspect or repair something yourself doesn't automatically cancel your manufacturer's warranty — but it can risk accidental damage, and some manufacturers do have specific service conditions. Check your product's warranty terms, or ask us, before deciding.

FAQ

7 FAQ

The control electronics can run from one leg while the induction coils need both. That is exactly the pattern Error 7 describes, which is why a lit panel does not rule it out.

Either can start. If a technician confirms the supply is short of a leg, the work moves to the house wiring; if the supply is sound, it stays with the appliance.
