What 3 Means
Error 3 is a flash failure on the interface board - the memory the board runs from has not read back as it should. Viking's VISC530 service manual (2009, page 16) lists the probable reason as a part failure on that board and the action as replacing it.
Common Causes of 3
- Memory problem on the interface board
- A part on the interface board has failed
- Supply disturbance during a start-up read
🔧 One Safe Check You Can Try
Cut power to the cooktop at the breaker for a couple of minutes and restore it, since a single failed read at start-up is not the same thing as a board that has genuinely lost its memory. If Error 3 comes straight back, there is nothing further to try from the surface.
⚠ Why You Shouldn't Go Further Than That
- Viking's documented action for Error 3 is board replacement, so the useful outcome of a home attempt is knowing whether it clears on a power cycle - and nothing beyond that.
- Reaching the interface board means lifting the glass top, which is bonded at its edges and cracks along that bond far more readily than it looks like it should.
- Interface boards are matched to the induction generator underneath them, so one fitted from another cooktop brings a configuration mismatch with it.
Opening a panel to inspect or repair something yourself doesn't automatically cancel your manufacturer's warranty — but it can risk accidental damage, and some manufacturers do have specific service conditions. Check your product's warranty terms, or ask us, before deciding.
