What 3 Flashes Means
Three flashes every five seconds with the compressor stopped is the VCC3 inverter reporting its own failure, or an interrupted connection between the inverter and the compressor terminals. Service manual SMR-0008A (2010, pages 40-41) has the technician check that cable and the three hermetic terminal pins first, and fit a new inverter only once the wiring proves sound.
Common Causes of 3 Flashes
- Inverter electronics have failed
- Cable between the inverter and the compressor terminals is open
- A connection at one of the compressor's three hermetic terminal pins has come apart
🔧 One Safe Check You Can Try
No part of this belongs to the homeowner. If the cabinet is still holding some cold, move the most perishable items into another appliance now rather than waiting to see whether it picks up, because with the compressor stopped it will not.
⚠ Why You Shouldn't Go Further Than That
- Those three terminal pins sit under a clip-on cover on a compressor that runs scalding hot, and the cover is routinely refitted crooked so it no longer holds the leads down.
- Fitting a new inverter before proving the compressor cable is intact is the commonest way to pay for a part that was never to blame.
- Everything in this compartment is line-voltage work, and the inverter retains charge after it is disconnected.
Opening a panel to inspect or repair something yourself doesn't automatically cancel your manufacturer's warranty — but it can risk accidental damage, and some manufacturers do have specific service conditions. Check your product's warranty terms, or ask us, before deciding.
